About DriveDist

DriveDist is a free tool for calculating driving distances, drive times, and gas costs between major US cities.

What's in our database

300 of the largest US cities (population from ~100,000 up to over 8 million), with 44,850 pre-computed routes between them.

Data sources

  • City data and coordinates from US Census Bureau public records
  • Distances computed from OpenStreetMap road network data
  • A road-distance coefficient of 1.25 is applied to straight-line distance to estimate typical driving routes

How drive time is estimated

Drive time is calculated from road distance and an average highway speed of 60 mph. This is a simple estimate that doesn't account for traffic, construction, weather, or stops. For trips through major metro areas (like NYC, LA, or Chicago), expect to add additional time during rush hours.

Gas cost calculator

Default estimates assume 25 MPG fuel economy and $3.40/gallon. The interactive calculator on each route page lets you enter your vehicle's actual MPG and your local gas price for an accurate trip cost. You can also split the total cost across multiple passengers for road-trip planning.
